Warrington Town 2 - 0 Castleton Gabriels
WARRINGTON conquered Castleton 8-0 in their previous North Western Trains League
meeting in March but were prevented from inflicting a similar drubbing on Monday due to an
heroic performance by goalkeeper John Ogden.
He pulled off a series of breathtaking saves, most notably when turning behind two fierce
drives by Jed Bushell, smothering at full stretch a 25-yard shot lashed in by Lee Holden
and also frustrated Steve Smith with two further top grade stoppages following venomous
shots by the midfielder.
Warrington, bolstered by the return of defensive lynchpin Mike Tandy but without the
suspended midfield supremo Terry Nestor and leading striker Kevin Tyrrell, had strode into
a 2-0 lead inside the first 22 minutes. A bizarre goal by Gavin McDonald opened the
scoring. An apparently innocuous lofted pass by the winger took a pronounced bounce in
front of Ogden, who under pressure by Jed Bushell, saw it propel over his upstretched arms
and into the net.
Tandy then emphasised his value to the side when he raced upfield to backhead in from
close range a cross by Robbie Preidt amid a crowded goalmouth. Striker Kevin Dack,
involved in his third spell at Cantilever Park and the sixth player to move to Warrington
from Tetley Walker since the end of last season, made his first appearance since his
return when he came on as substitute in the closing minutes.
Town: McCormack, Smith, Ashton, Callaghan, Tandy, L. Holden (Fenton 86mins), McDonald,
