Warrington end FA Vase hopes of Brewery men
Striker Kevin Tyrrell, who scored the winning goal and was sent off in Town's marvellous FA Vase win in the north east |
Warrington Town again overcame the odds to march throught to the third round of the FA Vase at Dunston on Saturday.
A passionately fought and engrossing encounter against the Northern League outfit, who were considered one of the favourites to win the tournament, led to Town's third consecutive conquest over higher division opponents this season. It was Town's sixth victory in a row - a feat the last achieved five years ago!
But it turned out to
be a game of mixed fortunes for Town's leading scrorer Kevin Tyrrell. He was sent off within moments of celebrated what transpired to be the winning goal after 80 minutes. His dismissal came for disputing a decision by the referee, resulting in his second booking of the tie. Tyrrell now faces the threat of missing the next stage of the Vase at North-Western Trains League Division One leaders Vauxhall on December 4th due to possible suspension.
The pattern of the match, which was full of goalmouth action, was set in motion within the opening two minutes when Town goalkeeper Neil McCormack excelled in tipping behind a stinging drive by Andy Elliott. Warrington then twice fired narrowly off-target through Jed Bushell and Andy Tague before McCormack was powerless to prevent Nicky Scaife stroking in a 15th minute penalty, awarded after Steve Cartledge tripped Paul Pitman from behind.
Cartledge, who played a crucial role throughout the game, went close to equalising minutes later when his cross-cum-shot rebounded off the underside of the bar into the hands of Dunston 'keeper Simon Bishop. Central defender Mike Tandy, who along with Cartledge and Andy Tague performed heroically at the back, had more luck to bring the sides level shortly before the interval. His 20 yard free kick took a deflection of Scaife in the defensive wall and spun past Bishop to register Warrington's 50th goal of their campaign.
